My 7-Point Checklist for Bodor Laser Consumables (That I Wish I Had from Day One)

If you're running a Bodor laser tube cutting machine or any of their fiber systems, this checklist is for you. Specifically, it's for the person—maybe an operator, maybe a buyer—who's tired of the head-scratching that comes with ordering the wrong nozzle or getting a batch of lenses that don't fit. 1. Confirm the Machine Model & Laser Source

This sounds obvious, but it's where I've tripped up. A 'Bodor laser' can mean a P series, S series, or a specialized tube cutter. The consumables are not interchangeable. Check the machine's nameplate—it's usually on the back of the main frame. I once ordered parts for a Bodor P6025, but our machine was actually a Bodor S6025. The laser head looked identical. It wasn't. The nozzle threads were different. That was a $150 mistake (ugh).

If you're ordering a consumable kit, double-check with your supplier whether it's for the 'Bodor standard head' or something else. 3. Check the Nozzle Type & Size

This is where the real money gets wasted. Nozzles come in different types (single-layer, double-layer) and different orifice sizes (1.0mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, etc.). The right choice depends on your material and gas type. Mistake I made: ordering 50 double-layer nozzles (1.5mm) because that's what we 'always used.' But we'd switched to nitrogen for a stainless steel job, and the single-layer 2.0mm would have been better. Fifty nozzles, $120, sat on the shelf for a year.

4. Inspect for 'C.O.' or 'Mild CO2 Laser' Confusion

I've seen a listing for a 'mild CO2 laser focusing lens' pop up in a Bodor search. If you're using a fiber laser, that lens is not for you. The wavelength difference means the optics will fail, possibly catastrophically. For a Bodor fiber system, you need a 1070nm or 1064nm lens (roughly), not a 10.6µm CO2 lens. If you see '1550 nm fiber coupled laser diode' in the specs for a lens, that's for a different type of laser source (telecom or medical) and won't work for cutting metal. Stick to components explicitly listed for fiber laser cutting.

5. Confirm the Protective Lens Type & Thread

Protective lenses (or 'cover glasses') are consumables that protect the expensive focus lens from spatter. They wear out fast. But they're not universal. They vary by diameter (usually 25mm or 30mm for fiber lasers) and by thickness. More importantly, the retaining ring thread pitch can vary. I once ordered a batch of protective lenses that were 1mm too thin. The retaining ring wouldn't hold them securely. The vibration caused the lens to crack within an hour. A $30 mistake in lenses turned into a $400 lens holder replacement because the broken lens scratched the holder's threads. Take this one seriously.

6. Run a Quick Fitment Check (If Possible)

If you're ordering a new type of consumable—say, a new ceramic ring or a different nozzle brand—order just one or two first. Don't buy a box of fifty until you've confirmed fitment on the actual machine. This is where I save the most money now. I used to buy bulk, assuming specs were exact. They're often 'close but not perfect.' For example, a generic 'Bodor compatible' nozzle might have a slightly different chamfer angle that affects the gas flow. Your cut quality will suffer. Test one, check the gas flow and cut edge, then order the rest.

This is the meta-step that keeps saving me. After I've confirmed the parts are correct and installed, I update a simple spreadsheet. It lists: date ordered, machine model, laser head model, part name and the specific SKU or size, and notes (e.g., 'worked fine' or 'threads were a bit tight'). This means the next time I need to reorder, I don't have to run the whole checklist again. I just look up the last successful order for that machine. It sounds like a no-brainer, but I didn't start doing this until my third major mistake.

A Few Common Mistakes to Watch For

Even with the checklist, here are the pitfalls I still catch myself almost making:

  • Assuming 'OEM Bodor' is always better. Sometimes it is, sometimes a good third-party supplier (like one specializing in fiber laser consumables) has better quality control or pricing. Don't assume the branded part is automatically the right one for your specific machine revision. Check the physical fit.
  • Skipping the lens inspection on arrival. A new protective lens can arrive with a tiny scratch you don't see until it's installed and you've started cutting. Inspect it under good light before you remove the packaging. A scratched lens will degrade the beam profile.
  • Ordering from unfamiliar vendors without checking shipping origin. If you're ordering a part from a supplier in, say, Duisburg, it might be genuine, but it might also be a re-labeled part. I'm not a logistics expert, so I can't speak to carrier optimization. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is to check if the vendor has a clear return policy for incorrect parts. If they don't, order a sample first.

My experience is based on about 40 consumable orders for a mix of Bodor tube and flatbed machines. If you're working with a different brand of laser head or a much older machine, your experience might differ.
